85 years of Salzburg trolleybuses
After a test ride on 29. September 1940 Salzburg`s first trolleybus line opened on 1. October 1940 between Maxglan and City center after the tram service on this section endet on 25. September 1940.
This first line was 2,53km long and was served by 3 trolleybuses (MAN/Schumann/BBC).
85 years later the trolleybus network with 12 lines has an extention of 128km, a fleet of 129 trolleybuses which work 5,5 Mio. km per year and offer their service to 35 Mio. passengers per Year.
Only between 1. Oktober 1940 and 5. November 1940 trolleybuses and trams met in Salzburg – then the tram system closed and trolleybuses took over the service. Obus 103 (MAN/Schumann/BBC/1940) meets tram 5 (MAN/ÖSSW/1909) on Makartplatz.

On the real "birthday" of the system the operator and "Pro Obus - Das Obusmuseum" offered historic rides with two trolleybuses of the museum`s fleet, with about 500 happy passengers on board.
